<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength converting element which can separate light of the objective wavelength from other light in a state of little loss of the light quantity. <P>SOLUTION: The UV generating apparatus is constituted in such a manner that the fundamental waves and the 7-th harmonic waves entering the wavelength converting element 5 are condensed to a wavelength converting crystal 6 and subjected to wavelength conversion to produce the 8-th harmonic waves. As the face in the exiting side of the wavelength converting crystal 6 is processed into a Brewster cut with respect to the 8-th harmonic waves, the 8-th harmonic waves can be made to exit from the wavelength converting crystal 6 with almost no reflection loss by controlling the 8-th harmonic waves to be P-polarized light with respect to the exit end face of the wavelength converting crystal 6. Further, since the crystal also functions as a prism by processing into the Brewster cut, a prism conventionally inserted to separate the 8-th harmonic waves from the fundamental waves and the 7-th harmonic waves can be eliminated. That is, although the fundamental waves (a), the 7-th harmonic waves (b) and the 8-th harmonic waves (c) are emitted from the wavelength converting crystal 6, only the 8-th harmonic waves (c) are drawn from the wavelength converting element 5 while the fundamental waves (a) and the 7-th harmonic waves (b) are blocked by a shielding plate 7 if these waves are not required. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
