PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating internal combustion engine for improving performance as compared with a known engine. SOLUTION: The reciprocating internal combustion engine has at least one double cylinder unit 17. Pistons 10, 12 are arranged at individual cylinders 14, 16, respectively. A crank mechanism is connected to the pistons so that the pistons reciprocate in the same direction in individual cylinders. Cylinder spaces 19, 20 are formed on a side that is separated from the crank mechanism of the piston for facing, and the cylinder spaces are formed for allowing the cylinder spaces to communicate each other between at least portions of the reciprocal movement of the pistons.
