PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for eliminating the effect of dirt due to adhesion of dust and paper powder or the like on a read line of a scanning optical system so as to properly carry out shading correction. SOLUTION: The image reader 1 stores data of only sensitivity ununiformity of an image sensor and a shading characteristic of the scanning optical system of a read section 2 to a uniform light source shading data storage section 4 as uniform light source shading data in advance, and the read section 2 stores data obtained by reading a white reference board before original reading to a read state shading data storage section 3 as reading state shading data. A shading data arithmetic section 5 of the image reader 1 applies correction processing to the uniform light source shading data for eliminating only the effect of the reading state shading data due to dirt or the like of the white reference board from the reading state shading data to acquire correction shading data, and a shading correction arithmetic section 6 carries out shading correction.
