Light emitting diodes (12, 14, 16) in series, are individually shunted in parallel by e.g. thyristors or triacs (18, 20, 22). These are switched on, by pulses, and remain so for the duration of current flow. Each has a parallel switch-on circuit (24, 26, 28). On exceeding a threshold voltage drop over the relevant LED, a control pulse is produced for the shunt (18, 20, 22).
