PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized image projection apparatus which uses a spatial light modulation device (DMD) and for displaying an image with high luminance and high image quality. SOLUTION: The image projection apparatus is provided with an illumination optical system 3 having a light source 1 and a rotating color wheel 2 having an RGB color filter, an illumination optical system for generating an illumination light 11, DMD 7 for changing the rotation angle of each micromirror, in response to a DMD control signal, and a projection optical system 9 or the like for projecting video light 12 reflected on each micromirror of DMD 7. An optical axis of the illumination optical system 3 and an optical axis of the projection optical system 9 are arranged in parallel, the arranged face of DMD 7 is parallel to the optical axis of the projection optical system 9 and is arranged at nearly 45 degrees with respect to a vertical line passing the optical axis of the projection optical system 9; and DMD 7 is arranged at nearly 45 degrees with respect to the optical axis of the projection optical system 9 on the arranged face, and an optical axis of the video light 12 and an optical axis of DMD 7 are arranged substantially orthogonal.
