PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that a container for emergency off requires a relatively large space and is relatively high in its cost. SOLUTION: The subject centrifuge has a centrifugal drum (2) equipped with outlet nozzles (7) in addition to a feeding tube (4) for a material to be centrifuged and is connected with an emergency off system in front of the centrifugal drum (2). Particularly, a separator (1) having a vertical axis of rotation is characterized in that the emergency off system has a feeding system (17) for particles, particularly balls (16), into the centrifugal drum. In a method for implementing the emergency off function of the centrifuge, the balls (16), which plug the outlet nozzles, are correspondingly guided into the centrifugal drum (2) in an emergency off case.
