A controller for an automatic transmission for a vehicle for controlling hydraulic pressures of first and second frictional engagement devices at a predetermined speed change by which the first frictional engagement device is brought into engagement while the second frictional engagement device is released, the controller being connected to a driving force source for temporarily increasing the rotational speed thereof when a predetermined down-shift is performed in the automatic transmission, wherein a speed change is judged that requires the engagement and/or release of the two engagement devices, wherein the speed change so judged is then judged whether it is a down-shift requiring the temporary increase of the number of rotational speed of the driving force source or a down-shift not requiring such an increase, and wherein the hydraulic pressures of the frictional engagement devices are controlled differently depending on whether the down-shift requires an temporary increase of the rotational speed of the driving force source or not.
