PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable automatic focusing with high accuracy by performing an accurate range finding calculation. SOLUTION: A signal outside a screen area is discriminated from image signals photodetected and outputted by the line sensors 21 and 22 of a passive sensor 20 by a calculation area definition means 30, and then, a range finding processing area is defined out of the screen area. As for the signals outputted from the line sensors 21 and 22, since the level of the detection signal in the area outside the screen is reduced, the signals in the screen area can be discriminated from the signals outside the screen area among all the signals outputted from the line sensors. A range finding calculation is performed in accordance with defined area information defined by the means 30.
