<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pedestrian protection system capable of determining if a subject of collision is a pedestrian or not when a traveling vehicle simultaneously collides with a plurality of the pedestrians. <P>SOLUTION: At the time of collision of the vehicle 1, an ECU 7 determines if the subject of the collision is the pedestrian or not based on each output of a plurality of load sensors 3 mounted on a front bumper 2, a G sensor 4 and a vehicle speed sensor 5, and operates a protection device when the subject of the collision is determined as the pedestrian. Specifically when the output of the G sensor 4 is over a specified level, the outputs of a plurality of the load sensors 3 are individually determined. When the output level falls within a certain output range and duration falls within determining time, the subject of the collision is determined as the pedestrian. Accordingly, in case of collision with a plurality of the pedestrians at the same time, when the output of at least one load sensor 3 detected at the collision with the pedestrian is in the output level, the ECU 7 determines the collision as the collision with the pedestrian. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
