<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To distribute contents to portable information terminal equipment by using a free short range communication means using an infrared ray or Bluetooth(R). <P>SOLUTION: This content distributing device 10 is provided with a storage part 14 for storing content data compression-encoded by a predetermined high efficiency compression algorithm, an infrared communication part 15 for transmitting content data stored in the storage part 14 by infrared communication and a PHS communicating part 12 for inputting the contents stored in the storage part 14 by a PHS. The contents are transmitted from the server device of a provider to the content distributing device 10. A portable information terminal 20 having an infrared communication part 24 is able to receive the distribution of the contents by the infrared communication from the content distributing device 10. In the portable terminal 20, a viewer for decoding and displaying the content data is stored.
