A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery of high energy density that suppresses the decomposition of electrolyte, exhibiting high charge discharge efficiency and excelling in charge discharge cycle characteristics. This secondary battery comprises a collector and, deposited thereon by CVD, sputtering, vapor deposition, flame spraying or plating, an active substance thin film capable of lithium occlusion and release. The active substance thin film is split in columnar form by cut lines formed in the direction of thickness. The secondary battery includes a negative electrode consisting of the columnar portions having the bottoms thereof adhering to the collector, a positive electrode capable of lithium occlusion and release and an electrolyte composed of a nonaqueous solvent and, dissolved therein, a lithium salt. The electrolyte contains a compound of the general formula (I): Rn-M=0...(I) wherein R is a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl provided that R's may be identical with or different from each other and may be independent substituents or may be bonded with each other to thereby form a ring; M is S or P; and n is 2 when M is S and 3 when M is P. |
