PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical amplification glass and an optical waveguide which can amplify to a broad band in a wavelength region of 1.52-1.63μm. SOLUTION: The optical amplification glass is composed of a matrix glass and Er which is added into the matrix in an amount of 0.01-10 wt.%. The matrix glass contains, by molar percentage, 20-80% SiO<SB>2</SB>, 2-50% Al<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, at least two kinds selected from the group of La<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, Yb<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, Ce<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, and Gd<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>with the proviso that the total content of La<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, Yb<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, Ce<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, and Gd<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is 1-40%, and at least one kind selected from the group of Li<SB>2</SB>O, Na<SB>2</SB>O, K<SB>2</SB>O, Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, and Ga<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>with the proviso that the total content of Li<SB>2</SB>O, Na<SB>2</SB>O, K<SB>2</SB>O, Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, and Ga<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>is 3-40%.
