PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording head having good recording characteristics and especially capable of suppressing unnecessary recording/erasing on an auxiliary magnetic pole layer or a write shield layer by improving the shapes thereof. SOLUTION: By connecting the front end surface 21b and the side end surface 21c of an auxiliary magnetic pole layer 21, and disposing a slope 21d where the width in a track width direction is gradually expanded from the front end surface toward a height direction, a corner part 21e is made dull, the concentration of magnetic fluxes returned from a recording medium in one place is suppressed, and the diffusion of the magnetic fluxes in a wide range is promoted. Thus, by enlarging a recording current applied to a coil layer, unnecessary recording/erasing on the recording medium from the auxiliary magnetic pole layer is suppressed even when magnetomotive force is increased, the intensity of a magnetic flux generated in the recording medium from a main magnetic pole layer 24 is increased by increasing the magnetomotive force, and recording characteristics are improved more properly.
