PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic cleaning device for a moving handrail capable of preventing the occurrence of electric additional work such as remodeling of a control panel and pulling-out of a power supply line when mounting it on an existing passenger conveyor later. SOLUTION: A base 3 has a cleaning part 5 coming into slide-contact with the moving handrail 1, is arranged below the moving handrail, and is turnably supported in the vertical direction. An abutting mechanism 6 is provided with a driving mechanism 7 turning the base upward by driving force of the moving handrail and turning the base downward and freely when the cleaning part is abutted on the moving handrail, a locking member 8 locking the base while the cleaning part is abutted on the moving handrail and formed to give force in the direction in which it leaves the base through the base, and a holding mechanism 9 maintaining a condition in which the locking member is engaged with the base by driving force of the moving handrail and allowing the locking member to leave the base when the moving handrail stops.
