The invention relates to a method for selectively extracting gold from gold-bearing materials. The gold-bearing material is subjected to the action of a caustic solution containing an oxidizing agent for gold that has a higher selectivity for gold than for the other metals in the material. In addition, the caustic solution contains a complexing agent that can complex gold in a more selective manner than the other metals in the material. The complexing agent is preferably selected among substances containing SH groups and is preferably 3-mercapto-1,2,4-triazol.
