A method for selecting a set of channels from a plurality channels in a signal processor, the method comprising sampling each one of a plurality of channels and obtaining a binary representation of each one of the samples, arranging each one of the binary representations of samples into a series of bit planes from a most significant bit plane containing the most significant bit of each binary representation, to a least significant bit plane containing the least significant bit of each binary representation, determining those bit planes having binary representations that conform to a predetermined value criteria, and selecting a set of channels by summing bits from each one of those determined bit planes that conform to the predetermined value criteria.
