The device has a display screen (2) and an opening for the introduction of a chip card. An electronic circuit (5) reads a digital image of a private account number in an integrated circuit (4) of the chip card and an engraved image of the account number on the card. The electronic circuit displays the numbers corresponding to the digital image and engraved image of the private account number on the screen. The electronic circuit includes contact terminals for assuring communication link with the micro-circuit of the chip card. An independent claim is also included for a process of detecting a tampering of a chip card having an integrated circuit on a front side and an engraved image of a private account number.
