Film holding device for holding an intermittently conveyed moving picture film (71) has a film guide path for guiding the moving film and a locking gripping device (61) that is moved between a release and gripping position in which the gripping device grips the film in the conveying plane so that it is held in a precisely defined position. For the gripping action of the gripping device a reference position can be used or an alternative position. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (a) a system comprising first and second film holding devices with the gripping devices of the film holders gripping in the reference and alternative positions respectively and; (b) a film sampling device for sampling an illuminated moving picture film.
