[Also in Division B1] In the preparation of vinyl acetate by reacting in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature ethylene, a molecular oxygen containing gas and acetic acid in the presence of a platinum group metal deposited on alumina, aluminosilicates, heavy metal oxides, metal oxide/ alumina complexes, carbon or pumice as catalyst; the catalyst is reactivated by heating the catalyst-support mixture in a liquid alkaline medium. Aqueous solutions of caustic soda or potash, sodium or potassium carbonate or an alcoholic solution of sodium or potassium ethoxide or methoxide may be used. Examples describe the reactivation or palladium on alumina, iron oxide, and an aluminium magnesium spinel.</p> |
