PURPOSE: A cathode using elemental sulfur, a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery provided with the cathode and their preparation methods are provided, to obtain a high capacity and a high energy density. CONSTITUTION: The nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is provided with a cathode, an anode and a nonaqueous electrolyte, wherein the cathode contains elemental sulfur and the anode contains a lithium-absorbed silicon. Preferably the nonaqueous electrolyte contains a room temperature molten salt having a melting point of 60 deg.C or less; a quaternary ammonium salt; and/or at least one solvent selected from the group consisting a cyclic ether, a chain ether and a fluorinated carbonate. Preferably the room temperature molten salt or the quaternary ammonium salt comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of trimethylpropylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, trimethylhexylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and triethylmethylammonium 2,2,2-trifluoro-N-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. The cathode is a nonaqueous electrolyte-impregnated one prepared by dipping an electrode containing elemental sulfur in a nonaqueous electrolyte and treating it under reduced pressure. |
