A rubber sheet supporting the paper to be crinkled circulates between the cylinder and the press beam. It circulates at a speed less than the peripheral speed of the cylinder. The side of the rubber sheet (11) facing the cylinder is provided with fine profiled ribs (19) in the longitudinal direction of the rubber sheet. In operation, the paper strip passes the press point between the heated cylinder and the circulating rubber sheet. The rubber sheet is formed as an endless belt with a thickness of approx. 5 mm. and a width greater than the working width. It has a rubber quality with a hardness of approx. 50 durometers. It is provided with a through reinforcement inlay (18) in order to reduce its expansion.
