Use of polyhydroxy-carboxylic acids (I) or substituted imino-polycarboxylic acids (II) is claimed as conditioning agents for keratin materials, in or for the preparation of cosmetic compositions, especially for hair treatment. Use of carboxylic acid derivatives of formulae R1(CHOH)4C(O)OX (I) or R2N(CHR3C(O)OX)2 (II) is claimed as conditioning agents for keratin materials, in or for the preparation of cosmetic compositions, especially for hair treatment. R1 = CH2OH or CO2X; X = H or a mono- or divalent cation derived from a transition or alkali(ne earth) metal, organic amine or ammonia; R2 = H, CH(CO2X)CH2CH2CO2X, CH2CH2OH, CH(Me)CO2X or CH2CH2N(C(O)R4)CH2CO2X; R3 = CH2CO2X when R2 = H; or R3 = H when R2 is other than H; and R4 = 1-30C alkyl or 3-30C cycloalkyl.
