PURPOSE: A method for displaying and setting a recording picture quality in a digital recording apparatus is provided to decode encoded data to output/display a video image, and to output/display a user selection menu for identifying/changing a current recording picture quality, so that a user can easily identify/change the current recording picture quality. CONSTITUTION: A semi-time shift mode is additionally set to directly output a data stream encoded by an MPEG encoder(12) to an MPEG decoder(15) while not being recorded in a hard disk(14). If a user requests a recording picture quality to be displayed, a CPU(13) sets the semi-time shift mode, and directly outputs the encoded data stream to the MPEG decoder(15), to output/display encoded and decoded video images through a screen of an outer connection apparatus. The CPU(13) outputs/displays an OSD image of a record mode selection.
