486,149. Retorts for destructive distillation ; discharging. WEST, I'. J., WEST, E., and WEST'S GAS IMPROVEMENT CO., Ltd. Feb. 18, 1937, No. 4879. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)) In an annular vertical retort for the carbonization of coal, and of the type described in Specification 408,738, in which the carbonization space a surrounds the combustion space, the charge in space a is supported on movable grates q which may be swung back to allow the hot coke to fall into rectangular coke cooling and steaming chambers r, s. The combustion space is divided into compartments b, c, d, e, f each having a gas inlet g and air inlet h, the gas being obtained from a, producer i and passing through conduits o between the coke cooling chambers to the inlets g. The air is preheated in a passage j by flues k through which pass the combustion products from the space m above the combustion spaces b to f, and the heated air passes to the combustion space through similar passages o<1>. The distillates leave through an outlet p. Two wedge-shaped portions 10 divert the coke from the ends of the annular space a into the cooling chambers r, s. The doors t, u, Fig. 7, are turned by toothed quadrants 12 actuated by a worm shaft 13, each door being counterbalanced by a weight 14. Final closing pressure is exerted by hanging links 15 actuated by eccentrics 16, and having adjustable abutments which engage the ends of arms 17 to which the doors are pivoted.
|
