PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-rigidity aromatic polyamide film and a magnetic recording medium using the film. SOLUTION: The aromatic polyamide film consists essentially of an aromatic polyamide represented by chemical formula (I) (wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is an optional aromatic group; and R<SP>2</SP>is an optional aromatic group) and simultaneously satisfies the following (1) to (4). (1) The film contains≥0.5 wt.% of at least one kind of metal or metal compound selected from the group consisting of aluminum, titanium, vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, zirconium, molybdenum, rubidium, palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, tantalum, tungsten, iridium, platinum and gold. (2) The arithmetic average roughness (Ra) of at least one surface is 0.001-1.5 nm. (3) The tensile modulus of elasticity in at least one direction is 10-20 GPa.
