PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hepatocyte growth factor II [HGF (II)] comprising a mature HGF (II) having a new physicochemical form, to provide a method for producing the same, and to provide a composition containing the HFG (II). SOLUTION: This mature HGF (II) has an estimated molecular weight of 82,000±5,000 Da measured by SDS-PAGE under a non-reducing condition and an estimated molecular weight of 92,000±5,000 Da measured by the SDS-PAGE under a reducing condition, and comprises a single-stranded polypeptide which grows a primary culture hepatocyte. The mature HGF (II) is useful as a liver regeneration accelerating agent after partial ablation of the liver, a remedy for liver diseases, such as acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, transition to hepatocirrhosis, and fulminant hepatitis, an anticancer agent, a remedy for an incision, and a diagnostic agent for the above diseases.
