PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter 1 that does not generate large thrust by helical splines 3a and 4b after an advance movement of an output shaft 3 stops. SOLUTION: A female side helical spline 4b is formed inside a clutch inner 4C and a stopper 16 is formed on an end portion on the opposite motor side of the spline 4b. An output shaft 3 is formed slidably to the axial direction in a manner that a male side helical spline 3a formed on a rear end portion of the shaft 3 is meshed with the spline 4b. With the above configuration, when the spline 3a of the output shaft 3 is brought in contact with the stopper 16, relative rotations of the helical splines 3a and 4b are blocked and movement of the output shaft 3 stops, therefore no thrust is applied to the shaft 3 after that and high load is not put on a bearing 20 for supporting the shaft 3, a front housing 19 or the like.
