PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transparent heat-resistant resin optical material having excellent heat resistance and dynamic characteristics and exhibiting negative birefringence, a high refractive index and a high Abbe number, in particular optical compensation members such as a film, a sheet and a retardation film. SOLUTION: The transparent heat-resistant optical material is made of a copolymer comprising specific olefin residue units and specific N-phenyl-substituted maleimide residue units and having 5×10<SP>3</SP>-5×10<SP>6</SP>weight average molecular weight in terms of a standard polystyrene equivalent, and it exhibits negative birefringence.
