PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a rear end of continuous paper without upsizing a printer or complicating a structure, in the shaftless type printer, and to effectively utilize the continuous paper without causing a shortage of the continuous paper during the performance of printing operations. SOLUTION: In the shaftless type printer 1, a detection mark 14 is provided in a flange 13 which is provided in a part 12 to be supported, detachably attached to the roll-shaped continuous paper 2; the presence or absence of the detection mark 14 in a detection position of an optical sensor 15 is determined; the rear end of the continuous paper 2 in a hopper 3 is determined on condition that the results of determination of the presence or absence of the detection mark 14 during the conveyance of the continuous paper 2 are identical with one another; and a length of a guide path P from the position of the determined rear end of the continuous paper 2 to a print part 4 is made as great as/greater than a predetermined maximum print size.
