An accommodating intraocular lens (100) is provided and includes an optic (110); a haptic (120) having an opening (125) formed therein; and a flexible membrane (130) having a first peripheral edge (134) and a second peripheral edge (132). The flexible membrane has an opening extending therethrough from the first peripheral edge to the second peripheral edge, wherein the first peripheral edge attaches to the optic and the second peripheral edge attaches to the haptic so that the optic is axially aligned with the opening. The flexible membrane is formed of a memory type material so that when the ciliary muscle constricts, the optic moves in an anterior direction and the flexible membrane deforms from a first position to permit the optic to move. Relaxation of the ciliary muscle causes the optic to move in a posterior direction, resulting in both the optic and flexible membrane toward the first position. |
