First combustion mode and second combustion mode are selectively performed. During the first combustion mode, a combustion chamber contains EGR gas of an amount larger than an amount where a generation amount of soot reaches its peak, so that soot is hardly generated. During the second combustion mode, the combustion chamber contains EGR gas of an amount smaller than the amount where the generation amount of soot reaches its peak. A polluta absorber preferably a NOx absorber, is disposed in an engine exhaust passage. In discharging NOx from the NOx absorber, while the first combustion mode is performed, the air-fuel ratio in the combustion chamber is made rich. On the other hand, while the second combustion mode is performed, additional fuel is injected into the combustion chamber in the latter half of an expansion stroke or during an exhaust stroke. <IMAGE> |
