Process and apparatus for hydrogen production. The apparatus comprising a reforming exchanger (14) arranged in parallel with an autothermal reformer (10) supplied with a preheated steam-hydrocarbon mixture, an air-steam mixtu re is supplied to the burner/mixer of the autothermal reformer (10) to obtain syngas effluent at 650~ - 1050~C. The effluent from the autothermal reformer (10) is used to heat the reforming exchanger (14) and combined reformer effluent is fed to shift reactor (30) and to separator (32, 34) to be separated into a mixed gas stream and a hydrogen-rich product gas stream.
