OPTICAL SHIFT ELEMENT, AND IMAGE DISPLAY APPARATUS AND PROJECTION TYPE IMAGE DISPLAY APPARATUS PROVIDED WITH THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical shift element which is suitably used for an image display apparatus, and to provide an image display apparatus and a projection type image display apparatus which are provided with the optical shift element and can realize a high quality display.

SOLUTION: The optical shift element has at least one optical shift section 1 containing a polarization modulation element 2 which modulates the polarization direction of incident light and a birefringent element 3 which has different refractive indices depending on the polarization direction of light and which shifts the position of the optical axis in accordance with the polarization direction of light. The optical shift section 1 has a compensation element which compensates the difference in the converted distance between the ordinary light and the extraordinary light passing through the birefringent element 3.
