PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decompression method capable of quickly decompressing character image data for an OSD (On Screen Display) display means regarding this invention compressed by a compression format of a character image which compresses the character image for the OSD display means and with high compression rate and returning the character image data to an original character image. SOLUTION: The compression format of the character image for the OSD display means has relative transfer coordinate data for storing X direction components and Y direction components of relative transfer dot quantity from the previous base point to the next base point so as to trace drawing base points in a prescribed order by defining an origin set at a prescribed position of a dot matrix as a drawing staring point and drawing instruction data for storing an instruction whether or not dots connecting adjacent drawing base points among the drawing base points are colored by a prescribed monocolor.
