PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for testing lateral pressure of an optical fiber capable of accurately measuring light transmission losses in periodic macro bents of the optical fiber, and an instrument therefor. SOLUTION: In this lateral pressure measuring method for the optical fiber for measuring fluctuation of the light transmission loss by connecting a light source to one end part of the optical fiber, by connecting a light transmission loss measuring instrument to the other end part thereof, and by clamping the optical fiber to apply a lateral pressure load, the light transmission loss is applied by structures 16A, 17A of two side pressure plates 16, 17 having the periodically varied structures 16A, 17A, under the condition where phases thereof are shifted.
