The invention relates to a method and system for controlling the state and operation of a motor vehicle. The method is characterised in that in order to restart the vehicle downhill on being stopped by activation of the static braking unit (7), after engagement of a gear in the direction of descent and release of the brake pedal previously depressed by the driver to a set pressure, said method comprises a release of the static braking unit (7) to permit the vehicle to continue downhill. The invention finds application in the field of automobiles.
