AN AIR CONDITIONING APPARATUS OF A SIMPLE STRUCTURE WHICH REALIZES REDUCTION OF POWER CONSUMPTION DURING COOLING OPERATION AND HIGH- CAPACITY PERFORMANCE DURING HEATING OPERATION WITHOUT USING SPECIAL DEVICES, AND WHICH HAS AN IMPROVED CAPACITY AT THE TIME OF STARTING OF COOLING OPERATION. THIS AIR CONDITIONING APPARATUS COMPRISES A COMPRESSOR 1, A FOUR - WAY VALVE 2 INCLUDING A PISTON 22 HAVING A BYPASS PORT 8, AN OUTDOOR HEAT EXCHANGER 3, A PRESSURE RELEASE DEVICE 4, AND AN INDOOR HEAT EXCHANGER 5, WHICH ARE CONNECTED BY REFRIGERANT PIPES 6, A BYPASS PIPE 9 WHICH CONNECTS THE FOUR- WAY VALVE 2 TO THE SIDE OF A SUCTION PIPE 6D OF THE COMPRESSOR 1 THROUGH A BYPASS VALVE 7, AND A CONTROL DEVICE WHICH IS DESIGNED TO CLOSE THE BYPASS VALVE 7 DURING HEATING OPERATION AND TO OPEN THE BYPASS VALVE 7 DURING COOLING OPERATION, AND IS DESIGNED TO CLOSE THE BYPASS VALVE 7 AT THE TIME OF STARTING OF COOLING OPERATION AND TO OPEN THE BYPASS VALVE 7 DURING NORMAL OPERATION THEREAFTER.
