PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device stopping an inverter circuit when a discharge lamp is out of order irrespective of the kinds of the lamps, lighting a plurality of kinds of discharge lamps having almost the same rated current and different rated voltages. SOLUTION: The device is provided with the inverter circuit converting a direct current supplied from a direct-current power source 1 into a high-frequency current, a discharge lamp load circuit lighting the discharge lamp 7, 11 with the high-frequency current from the inverter circuit, a positive/negative peak detecting circuit P300 dividing and outputting the positive/negative value detected at a peak detecting part detecting the peak value of a discharge voltage of the positive/negative half cycle of the discharge lamps 7, 11 by an impedance element, and a judging circuit H100 outputting a stop signal for stopping oscillation of the inverter circuit when an output voltage of the positive/negative peak detecting circuit P300 is out of a prescribed range.
