PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the working time by easing setting or adjustment operations for gamma correction tables of color signals and monochrome signals. SOLUTION: A monochrome pattern 31 of gamma adjustment pattern data 10a is replaced with a pseudo binary error diffusion pattern, the pseudo binary error diffusion pattern is thus created by dithering process. A color pattern 30 and the monochrome pattern 31 are subjected to the dithering process in a multi-valued gradation processing unit 12, and a test pattern showing a color gamma adjustment pattern and a monochrome gamma adjustment pattern is created. By switching between color reading and monochrome reading by a 4-line CCD sensor 16a, the color gamma adjustment pattern and the monochrome gamma adjustment pattern on the one test pattern are sequentially read so that creating or adjusting operation of the gamma correction table is performed at a time.
