PURPOSE: An apparatus for inputting characters in a mobile terminal and a method therefor are provided to easily and efficiently input Hangul to a mobile terminal. CONSTITUTION: A key input unit(10) is formed of a plurality of first vowel keys(11) to which single vowels are assigned, respectively, a second vowel key(13) assigned with other single vowels, and a plurality of consonant keys(15) assigned with a plurality of consonants respectively. If the first vowel keys(11) are inputted two times consecutively, a control unit recognizes the vowel keys as simple vowels. If the second vowel key(13) is inputted two times consecutively, the control unit recognizes the vowel key as the vowel. If the second vowel key(13) is inputted three times consecutively, the control unit recognizes the vowel key as a diphthong. If any one of the first vowel keys(11) is inputted and then the second vowel key(13) is inputted, the control unit recognizes the vowel keys as other diphthongs obtained by adding a vertical stroke to the vowels sensed by signals by the first vowel keys(11).
