<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pointing input device and input method for easily detecting the rotation and movement distance of a finger simultaneously scanning of a fingerprint pattern. <P>SOLUTION: Counting of the number of crossing ridge lines and detection of a fingerprint area (step S4) are performed at the time of sensor scanning, and a fingerprint center point is calculated from the number of crossing ridge lines (step S7). The movement distance of the finger is detected by its position change (step S8).
