PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a formamide compound having an aldehyde group more simply and more economically in high yields by allowing no acetic acid to present in the reaction solution and using the smallest necessary amount of formic acid. SOLUTION: The method for producing the formamide compound having at least one aldehyde group comprises reacting a diamine compound represented by formula I (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, and t-butyl; and n is a number of 1 to 6) with formic acid at 20 to 120°C and is characterized in that the reaction is carried out by using 1.0 to 10.0 fold amount of formic acid based on the number of moles of the compound represented by formula I.
