PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new polyimide resin having greatly improved water resistance of a solid polymer electrolyte useful in a fuel cell, etc.

SOLUTION: The branched sulfonated polyimide resin has a basic skeleton composed of an imide unit represented by formula (1) [Ar4is selected from bifunctional substituent groups which contain aromatic rings and in which at least a part of hydrogen atoms is substituted with a sulfonic acid group; Ar6is selected from trifunctional substituent groups which contain aromatic rings or no aromatic ring; n is ≥2; m is ≥0; s is ≥1] in which a part of the basic skeleton is combined with a trifunctional imide unit represented by formula (2).
