<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display an image with excellent contrast without modulating incident light when no voltage is applied (in black display) to a spatial light modulating element without complicating its manufacturing. <P>SOLUTION: The image display device has the liquid crystal display element. The liquid crystal display element has a built-in inorganic color filter 4.
