PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize efficient research of living things while eliminating useless consumption of film and other photographing media by preventing photographing caused by erroneous reaction of a sensor incident to natural phenomenon and dupulicated photographing of an identical object in automatic photographing using the sensor. SOLUTION: In the automatic photographing method where a camera is operated after making a decision whether an object being sensed by a sensor can be photographed or not, dupulicated photographing and photographing caused by erroneous operation of the sensor are prevented by setting the camera in photographable state or non-photographable state based on a sense signal from the sensor. The automatic photographing system comprises a camera, a sensor for sensing an object, a means for operating the camera in response to reception of the sense signal from the sensor, and a first control circuit for controlling operation of the camera operating means based on the sense signal from the sensor and setting photographable mode or non-photographable mode.
