Preparation of vinpocetin (I) comprises dehydrating a vincamine ester (II) to form an apovincamine derivative (III) which is then transesterified to (I). Dehydration is with thionyl chloride, phosphoroxy chloride, phosphorus pentoxide, acetic anhydride or hydrochloric acid. Preparation of vinpocetin (I) comprises dehydrating a vincamine ester of formula (II) to form an apovincamine derivative of formula (III) which is then transesterified to (I).
