<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of guaranteeing its own operation when abnormality is generated in a sheet material carrying part and capable of minimizing deterioration in device performance such as the productivity and picture quality of the device at the normal use of the device. <P>SOLUTION: When abnormality is generated in the sheet material carrying part, a reference signal for control of image formation and carrying of sheet materials is changed from a normal reference signal.
