PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having good traveling performance, durability and electromagnetic conversion characteristics. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium constructed by sequentially forming a nonmagnetic layer containing nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer containing ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a non-magnetic support, the average size of the ferromagnetic powder is 20 to 60nm, a recess distribution of the depth 20nm or more of the magnetic layer surface is 30 pieces/(175μm×130μm) or less, and a surface lubricant index is 1.1 to 4.
