PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for edge extraction capable of stably extracting edges of an object even if an image for edge extraction contains noise components in the device and method for extracting the edges of the object in an image search area. SOLUTION: The method for extracting the edges of the object in an image search area comprises a step of calculating difference values between contiguous inquiry figures about an integrated value obtained through integration of brightness projection value along perimeters of a plurality of inquiry figures similar to the object with reference to a reference point placed at an arbitrary position within the image search area, extracting the difference values to be maximum, and holding the extracted values as the candidate maximum difference values. The method also comprises a step of determining as the edge of the object the inquiry figure showing the greatest candidate maximum difference value among a plurality of candidate maximum difference values obtained by shifting the reference point.
