PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object discriminating apparatus for accurately detecting the presence/absence of a vehicle and a pedestrian or the traffic quantity, even if the apparatus is set at an open road through which the pedestrian passes, by discriminatingly detecting a two-wheeled vehicle and the pedestrian. SOLUTION: An object discriminating apparatus 1 is structured so as to discriminate an object as the pedestrian, when an object having a height and a width to be within a prescribed ranges, e.g., the height of 100 cm-200 cm and the width of 50 cm-80 cm is detected, within a pedestrian detecting area with a prescribed width set on a side section at a road RD. On the other hand, an object detected outside the detecting area even if the object has a size within the prescribed range is disriminated as a motor cycle.
